How to choose the right loyalty card program for your shop

There is no universal best program — only the right fit for your average ticket, visit frequency and margin. Four short questions are usually enough to land on the right one.

1. What is your average transaction value?

Under €10 — stamp cards win every time. The customer can count the stamps on the way home and that mental math is the whole engine. Between €10 and €40 — points or cashback start to make sense because the customer sees percentage rewards add up. Above €40 — tiered VIP and cashback dominate, because the absolute reward needs to feel meaningful, not symbolic.

2. How often does a happy customer return?

Multiple times per week (cafes, bakeries, lunch spots) — stamp cards or hybrid stamp-plus-points are the winners because the reward window closes fast. Weekly to monthly (salons, fitness, pet stores) — points or tiered VIP, because the customer needs visible progress between visits. Less than monthly (high-ticket retail, specialty services) — cashback or referral cards, where each visit makes a meaningful jump.

3. What is your gross margin on the reward item?

If the reward is a high-margin product (a coffee at 80%+, a printable add-on, a small accessory), be generous: give it every 8–10 visits. If it is a low-margin product (a full meal, a service hour, a bottle of wine), tighten the math: 12–15 visits, or switch to percentage cashback so the reward scales with the customer's spend rather than being a fixed gift.

4. Do you actually want plastic, paper or digital?

Plastic loyalty cards look premium but cost €0.40–€1.20 per card, get lost, and require a magnetic stripe reader you don't have. Paper punch cards are cheap but invisible to your analytics — you genuinely cannot tell which customer comes back. Digital cards in Apple Wallet or Google Wallet cost nothing per customer, never get lost (the phone is always there), and give you reporting on visits, average spend and time-of-day patterns. Unless you sell luxury, go digital.
